IMMATERIAL
It was such a honour to be a part of ‘Immaterial’ a solo show put on by Flinders first ever honours dance student Alix Kuijpers.
“Immaterial is a self interrogation of the modern fixation of drag, questioning what it means to be a drag performer in the age of it’s mainstream success. The work is a personal navigation back through drag emotional beginnings for many as a gateway to the trepid curiosity of gender expression, and is a journey into the euphoria of gender. The power of self-discovery and the divinity that comes from knowing who you are”
As Immaterial was a solo show, all of it up until this point was Alix , from choreography to sound and most of the lighting. I felt it was important that a lot of Alix was incorporated in the sculptures; things such as iconic drag looks and stereotypical elements of drag that he couldn’t obtain that exclude him from the scene.
Immaterial ground plan: seating capacity was still to be determined and the permission to use remaining white plinths as seating was waited on so it is not included in the plan. Venue was also drawn by me.
Just like any other TafeSA production, we didn’t have much time to put the show together from the briefing right to the bump in. That’s why for the first design concept I decided to work digitally for a easier and faster editing turnover. This also allowed me to sit down with Alix and edit on the spot when need be. More detailed drawing was made when initial sketches were approved.
